ISO 9001:2024 – Key Changes and What to Expect

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) is revising ISO 9001, the world’s most widely recognised quality management standard. ISO/CD 9001:2024 is currently under review by the Quality Management Technical Committee (ISO/TC 176) and is expected to replace ISO 9001:2015 by 2026. These revisions aim to keep ISO 9001 relevant in today’s evolving business environment. Here are the key changes organizations need to be aware of:

Major Changes in ISO/CD 9001:2024

  1. Clause 3 – Terms and Definitions
    • 20 additional definitions from ISO 9000 have been included to ensure consistent understanding and application of the standard’s terms.
  2. Clause 4.1 – Understanding the Organisation and Its Context
    • Organisations must now assess whether climate change is a relevant issue, emphasising the importance of environmental considerations in quality management.
  3. Clause 4.2 – Understanding the Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties
    • Two new notes highlight that relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change and provide examples of these parties.
    • Clause 4.2(b) has been divided into 4.2(b) and 4.2(c) for greater clarity.
  4. Clause 5.1 – Leadership and Commitment
    • Promoting ethics and integrity: Leaders must actively promote ethical behavior and integrity within the organisation.
    • Mission, vision, and values: Organisations are required to define, implement, and continuously improve their mission, vision, and values, fostering a quality culture aligned with their strategic direction.

Preparing for ISO 9001:2024

Although the changes are still in draft form, organisations and businesses should start assessing their current systems and identify areas needing adjustments. The emphasis on environmental issues, ethics, and leadership presents an opportunity to align quality management practices with global trends in sustainability and corporate governance.

As the final release of ISO 9001:2024 approaches, businesses that proactively understand and integrate these new requirements will be better positioned for a smooth transition and continued certification success.
